PM Bhattarai chooses Nepal-made Mustang jeep as new ride goes to Kirtipur instead of Shahid Smarak for memorial service

Newly-elected Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has started to break with long-held traditions immediately after being sworn-in as the 35th prime minister of the country on Monday.

First he surprised many by doing something very different from what the previous top executive of the country did -- PM Bhattarai chose Nepal-made Mustang Jeep as his new official ride instead of the more expensive and luxurious vehicles his predecessors used.

The second Maoist prime minister of the country after the election of Constituent Assembly in 2008 had asked home ministry officials to manage a new, but indigenous set of wheels as his ride on Sunday.

PM Bhattarai had shown interest to ride Mustang jeep with the officials at the home ministry yesterday afternoon after it became certain that he will be elected as the new prime minister, Kantipur daily reported.

Upon receiving information about his interest to ride Mustang jeep manufactured by Hulas, the home ministry officials had immediately started making inquiry about the availability of vehicle and legal procedure of its registration under state ownership.

The ministry officials, who were undecided about the official ride for the new prime minister until yesterday, were surprised to know his interest in Mustang jeep which is far cheaper (Mustang jeep comes at a price range between Rs 1.2 million to 2 million) and less-attractive compared to a number of chic and expensive Japanese, European and US made vehicles available in the market.

According to the ministry officials, Prime Minister and ministers look for new and expensive vehicle worth up to Rs 10 million once they assume office.

Meanwhile, PM Bhattarai has discarded another tradition of Nepalese prime ministers going to Shahid Smarak immediately after assuming office to offer garland and flower to the statute of martyrs.

Instead, he has gone to Kirtipur to offer garland of flower to the statute of Pushpa Lal Shrestha, the founder of Communist Party of Nepal on his Nepal-made ride
